As part of the overall Riverside Dene regeneration strategy, klr Planning was instructed to re-negotiate the planning application to secure permission for the creation of a dedicated venue located on the brownfield site in Elswick, Newcastle, for the Newcastle Eagles Basketball Team.
Whilst the principle of the development of the site for a basketball arena was already in place, there had been a number of ongoing, complex problems that affected progress, including changes in planning policy at national and local levels.
klr Planning was tasked to resolve the issues and secure planning permission against the current planning policy context while coordinating a diverse and complex team.
The planning application was successfully secured for the erection of a basketball hall, training and competition venue with up to 2,800 capacity spectator seating, changing facilities and player’s gym facility; ancillary offices, teaching accommodation and meeting rooms; hospitality area, shop and café/kitchen.
The outcome means that the arena will provide not just a dedicated venue for all future competitive basketball matches within the UK premier league but also provides facilities for the community and Eagles Community Foundation Charity, which includes the creation of jobs and training opportunities linking with the local sports colleges.
